What to Expect at a DivorceCare Group
Separation and divorce can leave you feeling disoriented and emotionally drained. Whether the pain is fresh or the divorce happened long ago, the wounds can still run deep. And often, it’s a kind of hurt that stays hidden—because people around you don’t see the sleepless nights, the silent grief, or the questions that keep coming. It’s hard to explain, and even harder to carry alone.
That’s where DivorceCare comes in. These weekly groups meet in person and online and offer a welcoming, supportive community where you can process your story, feel understood, and begin to experience relief from the pain—with help from people who truly get it.
Unsure about attending? Here’s what to expect
If the idea of joining a DivorceCare group feels intimidating, you’re not alone. That’s why we created a preview video so you can get a sense of what a group session is like before attending.
You’ll meet people who understand
DivorceCare groups bring together people from all walks of life—people who’ve experienced the heartbreak of broken relationships and are working through it one day at a time.
Over 13 weeks, you’ll meet weekly to:
- Understand what’s normal (emotionally, spiritually, physically) after separation and divorce
- Gain helpful guidance from counselors and divorce-recovery experts, plus personal stories, on common challenges faced after a marriage breakup
- Share with others who truly understand what you’re facing (only if you want to!)
- Learn practical tools for managing stress, making decisions, and rebuilding your life
As one participant shared:
“I found real people with real stories—who offered hope without pressure. It felt like I belonged.” Marissa
What each group session includes
1) Weekly video session: Each week begins with a video featuring Christian counselors, pastors, healthcare professionals, and people who’ve personally experienced divorce. They speak into topics like conflict, forgiveness, finances, co-parenting, and healing—offering biblical wisdom and real-world help. Preview the sessions here.
2) Group discussion: After the video, you’ll have a chance to connect with others. You can share how the topic applies to you, ask questions, or simply listen. No one is forced to speak, and every voice is respected.
While the questions will relate to the video and change each week, here’s a sample of what to expect:
- Looking back at this past week, when did you feel the most alone in your separation or divorce? How did you handle that moment?
- What changes in your daily life have felt the hardest since your separation/divorce, and why?
- How have your feelings toward your former spouse shifted recently—whether grief, anger, relief, or something else—and what does that reveal about where you are in your healing journey?
- Guided reflection questions
- Practical exercises for everyday struggles
- Bible verses and personal devotionals
- Space to write and process your journey
As one participant shared:
“The workbook gave me structure when everything else felt chaotic.” James
